Clary sage has a herbaceous aroma with hints of floral tones. It is perhaps best known for its relaxing and sedating properties and is often incorporated into products that aim to reduce stress and allow for a positive period of sleep. It is also useful for greasy complexions and helping regulate sebum.

Clary sage has a fragrance that is not always likable to some people so it is often used in blends to retain properties but create a more acceptable aroma. It blends particularly well in a classic mix with lavender and chamomile and is also suited to citrus, floral and wood oils such as rose geranium or cedarwood.
