It is believed Valentine’s Day gets its name from a famous saint. It is told that a roman priest, Valentine, went against the wishes of Roman Emperor Claudius 11 who had banned marriage within his armies as he considered married men made bad soldiers.
Valentine thought this was unfair, so he continued to marry couples in secret. When Claudius found out Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death.
Whilst in jail Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and left her a love note when he was taken to be executed on February 14th, this note was signed off ‘from your Valentine’.
Although there are many different stories surrounding this tradition, we still enjoy sharing special cards and gifts with our loved ones to this day. A secret card or gift sent to show affection or love to a partner or received from an admirer is a lovely way to show you care and are cared for.
This is something that can give such a warm feel-good feeling, and in this day and age is needed maybe more than ever.
