Phenoxyethanol Preservative

Phenoxyethanol Preservative. INCI: 2-Phenoxy ethanol.

Phenoxyethanol is a common, multi use,  broad spectrum preservative that is suitable for both leave on and rinse off formulations. It is a clear, slightly oily liquid with a very mild, pleasant odour.

This is a non-formaldehyde releasing ingredient which is paraben and sulphate free. It also contains no propylene glycol or DEA therefore is extremely useful in many cosmetic and household products.

This preservative itself has a PH of 7 but is effective for use in a wide PH variation in a wide range of products where it offers broad spectrum activity against many pathogens including bacteria, mould and yeast.

Phenoxyethanol preservative is suitable for a wide range of personal care applications including:

• Shampoos and shower gels (rinse off) extends shelf life.
• Products intended for children under 3 years of age due to it’s mild nature -check with cosmetic chemist for each formulation.
• Creams and lotions. Helps protect against contamination.
• Eye and lip care products.
• Oral care products.

Typical recommended level of use for this product is 0.2-1%. Levels permitted by EU regulations.

This is an extremely mild preservative therefore can be safely used in products that necessitate mildness for example baby formulations, wipes etc.  As this preservative is both oil and water soluble it is also an extremely useful addition to many other products. Eg. Cleaning products, room sprays etc.

This preservative is also commonly used as a stabiliser in many skin care and hair care products such as perfumes, shampoos, soaps and make up.

Phenoxyethanol Preservative is intended for external use only.
