Peppermint Essential Oil: Mentha Piperita

Peppermint essential oil is one of the more versatile oils. It has a wonderfully stimulating effect on the mind and can be useful for uplifting emotional states. It has a long history of use for medicinal purposes to calm digestive problems, reduce nausea and aid respiration all due to its penetrating scent. Incredibly useful, peppermint oil is often applied topically blended with a suitable carrier oil for problems like headache, muscle aches and joint pains. It is also used in aromatherapy for treating coughs and colds, reducing stress and reducing pain.

This oil naturally contains menthol, a real head clearer, which has cooling and refreshing effects providing anti-inflammatory and soothing actions. Peppermint is often used as a food flavouring as well as a fragrance for soaps and cosmetics. It has also been used as a successful cleaning agent around the home and is said to be a good insect repellent. Spiders are supposedly repulsed by this scent so a very useful oil to have around.

Peppermint blends extremely well with Eucalyptus and is a long term classic combination when mixed with Rosemary. You can also try it with lavender and citrus oils.

Never ingest or apply undiluted essential oils to the skin.
